if you want to keep a little more procedural, use the poly expand SOP

Depending on what solver are you using if you are using the SOP solvers then Vellum has its caching memory in the advanced tab, pyro on the setup tan under simulation, same with bullet solver, etc if you are using a DOP network under the cache tab you can change the settings.
