I've been working through the smashing columns tutorial with H12.

I'm at the point where materials are being applied. The mantra surface has been assigned to the columns and then the lesson goes into the circle_object and adds a material node to the output of the file1 node.

So far so good, but then he clicks on the group disclosure triangle in the attributes pane for the material1 node and selects “inside” from a long list. When I click the triangle I get “no entries.”

What did I do wrong, or is this problem related to the difference between versions of Houdini?

No , but it certainly sounds like you have not created a group and not having seen the video I would be looking at what the “inside” group contains and making one.

Well, I tried it again, from the beginning, and made sure I didn't miss a single step, and once again I get to the same place, and there are no entries in the groups pulldown.

Is there a preference setting that automatically creates groups as you build?

The application of materials begins at about 35:00 in the “Lesson 1 Quickstart.”

I've done this before in H11 and it worked fine. There must be something different in H12.

When I open the old file it gives me a warning.
Warning:
/obj/AutoDopNetwork/rigidbodysolver1:
Skipping unrecognized parameter “folder1”. See Pic.
When I open the group pulldown this is what I see (pic2)

I guess the warning isn't an issue, but there must be something about the caching of the simulation because all of the items in the list are the fractured pieces of the columns.

Hi,
The video shows a material applied to some geometry that gets created after the columns have been smashed. I bet you any money if you look inside your DOP network and the fracture DOP you will see check box to turn on a group called “inside”

I recently had the same problem getting the ‘inside’ option to appear. What I did wrong was when I rendered out my sim with the ROP node I forgot to add _$F.bgeo to the name of the exported footage i.e smashing_$F.bgeo and then bought that into the file node, added the material sop and inside was now available.
