Hi,

This is what I'm trying to model.

As you can see, the top goes from a square to a circle.

I know how to do this in Cinema 4D, but am having problems trying to repeat it in Houdini.

This is what I need to do.

I tried beveling a point on a grid, but that didn't work.

Any suggestions?

Very cool. That was very nice of you to create that video!

It showed me the step I was missing. I tried the Poly Split, but never knew about the divisions.

Thanks again!

Actually the harryabreu's video is not the best way to approach this.
If you need to have that hole perfectly round, you have to take the approach in the .hip I've attached.

As a side note, the video reveals at least two unpleasant realities:
one it shows how inefficient is modeling using radial menus or any other kind of menu, instead of hotkeys;
and two, how incomplete and thus disappointing, for me, is the newly re-written PolySplit tool.

no need for polysplit
after your subdivide1 just select those 4 subdivided polys, polyextrude/inset, then Edit SOP/Make Circle

Yep, that's even faster.

@Jim If you can't find the “make circle” option, just press “T” to auto create an edit node and then RMB outside the gizmo area to have the menu with that option open. Hotkey is “shift+C”.

Thanks!

I will look at your .hip file.

I ended up ‘cheating’ a bit and using the new boolean SOP which seemed to work OK, but I know is not the best practice.
