I've already submitted a bug report through the proper channels, but I figured I'd try to get some help here as well.

If I group select, it always behaves as if the "A" key (loop selection) is stuck on, and can't do ANYTHING except loop select. No box select, lasso, nothing works except selecting through a loop. It can be seen in the second half of this video. This was never an issue until just recently, so maybe it has something to do with 20.5?



I would be absolutely thrilled if this were just a mistake on my part, that I toggled some bizarre setting and that the fix for this is simple.

Has anyone else encountered this issue?

Usually there are no such errors. Although several times strange errors with selection or disappearance of groups appeared and only rebooting Houdini helped.
And yes, with any strange behavior, start with resetting the viewport. Quite a few bugs are hidden there.

I had tried resetting the Viewport several times, and resetting Houdini itself several times, to no avail. HOWEVER, after resetting the whole computer, everything seems to be working fine (for now....). It could be that because I sometimes leave the computer on for several days at a time, some sort of rot happened at the system level which caused this bug (it really shouldn't be like this, but that's just how computers are).

I kinda also get the vague impression that opening multiple Scene Views (3D viewports) might on some level "accelerate" this rot that leads to instability in Houdini. But I'm not sure.

I will periodically update this thread when I have new findings.

hi there, have you find a solution to this? I have been getting the same bug. extremely frustrating. I have tried restarting houdini, create a new scene but nothing. Might try restarting my pc as well however, it would be really annoying if that is the only way to fix this. I love houdini but I will say, with subsequent updates i have been noticing more bugs and glitches. I hope we avoid a second maya and not only focus on growth but also resolving current issues that often plague houdini, the viewport definitely being one of them.

It still happens to me from time to time, but not enough that it really bothers me anymore. I'm still not sure what causes it, but I'll speculate it might have something to do with a connected drawing tablet monitor. Do you have one of those (like a Huion or something)?

I've noticed that after I switched to another drawing tablet (one of the new XP-Pens) thus changing the drivers and stuff, I haven't noticed the problem since, but it's a little too early to tell I think.

An update for anyone who's interested in this bug. As of 20.5.410, it still happens, and it doesn't seem to have anything to do with drawing tablet, so we can rule that out. Another theory I've come up with is that it could be related to splitting the viewer scene tab into another (for example, geometry spreadsheet tab). I've noticed that the viewport tumbling bug seems to come on sooner when I take the geometry spreadsheet tab (the default one alongside the main viewport scene tab) and split or tear it off.

I don't understand why that would trigger it as opposed to the other tabs already open such as the network view or parameters tab, but that's what I've observed.
