Am I missing something ?

When I do preview renders I can get a good result with Volume Step Size of say 0.5 but if I unclick “preview” mode I look's far more worse and not until Volume Step 0.2 or below it starts to look as it did in preview mode.

Am I doing something wrong or is this just how it works ?
