I have been facing crashes in Houdini sometimes when I create a new file, and the popup opens for asking me to save the current file. The moment I press 'save and new' or am about to reach for the button, Houdini crashes. I am using 19.0.657.

I also faced this issue in 19.5.303. I thought maybe daily builds will help address this issue but till all the daily builds upto 19.5.343, I have faced this issue.

I am enclosing the zip of all the temp files which were created automatically today in the following folder today.

C:\Users\myusername\AppData\Local\Temp\houdini_temp

I hope they give a picture of what exactly is causing this crash. Please suggest a solution.

I am using Houdini on Windows 10 - 64 bit. It is upto date including all the drivers installed on my laptop.

Faced the crash again. I got the message.

18412: Fatal error: Segmentation fault
Saving application data to C:/Users/MYPCNAME~1/AppData/Local/Temp/houdini_temp/crash.untitled.MYPCNAME_18412.hip

19.5.303 but 19.0.622 as well.

You should probably log a bug. There's this message at the top of every forum that says READ THIS FIRST that let's ya know how to do it.

I used to have this issue all the time, for me it was due to having Redshift installed. This may not apply here but after I stopped using Redshift, I've never once experienced this issue again.

Followed the advice of deleting the .pref files and still it didn't work. I have registered a bug by filling the form now.

Hmm...I also have Redshift installed but I know others who also have it installed and aren't facing any crashes.

Me, too. RS is installed (3.5.06 with 19.5.303). After two minutes H crashes.

2588: Segmentation fault.

When I took the Redshift .json out of the packages folder it seems to work. Can this please get sorted out? This seems to be a major bug.

Do send these two files from the houdini temp folder to them.


Everytime there is a segmentation fault notification and then there's a crash. The five digit number behind segmentation error keeps changing though.

SideFX staff doesn't visit these community driven forums. They check the bug reports regularly that are submitted by the users using the form available above.

I've been getting segmentation fault crashes ever since 19.5 303.
In various situations, some repeatable some not, on two different machines, with and without redshift installed.
19.5 is bloody unstable.

I have the same problem on 19.5.303.

For me, removing the Redshift .json files in the folder

C:\Program Files\Side Effects Software\Houdini 19.x.xxx\packages\

...solved the issue.
I have setup redshift by editing the houdini.env file only now.

Try updating to latest daily build and install custom redshift build released by Maxon. I have explained the steps here.
