Built in Shaders

I'm using Houdini 11.0.581 Apprentice on Os X 10.6.6

Multiple tutorials I've been doing refer to many built in shaders that I don't see in my Tab menu. I've tried reinstalling with no luck.

Do these pre-built shaders need to be installed seperately and if so how do I do this on Os X?

Thanks in advance,

I'm starting to realize through trial and error that I must be using a newer version of Houdini which has some updated workflow concepts than is in the tutorials.

It's interesting that there are new methods of promoting parameters and that the Gallery/ Tab menu have much less pre-defined materials/ shaders. I'm hoping that it means the methodology for lookdev artists may have been refined in the latest version.

If this is true can someone point me to information that might help me understand the changes for shader creation over the last few major releases?

Thanks,

hi Jon

Yes H11 has reduced the number of out-of-the-box shaders. Instead there are shader builders: ‘Material builder shader’ and ‘surface builder shader’ (for non-PBR and PBR respectively? I'm not completely sure).

Take a look at Peter Quint's video tutorials on Vimeo there is one dealing with this topic.

Thank you for clarifying that Mark :-) This info will help me greatly in deciphering older tutorials and determining how much time I should hover on certain topics.

Best regards,
