Shading/Shader/HDK : Concept for extensibility

Hi,

I am new to the Material side of HDK.

When translating the shading/material/VEX network to a new shading system/language (RSL, OSL etc), should one be aim to reproduce the look at a high level e.g. Lambert/Plastic/Bricks or at a low level e.g. shading function for Ramp etc. and register this low level function with Houdini so that it benefits from the entire shading system including LOD, time (Motion blur) etc…

I am thinking a low level approach will be more flexible.

Which section of the document should one aim to start with ?
