I can't seem to find any preference settings that allow me to tumble around the selected geometry. I would also like to zoom to the mouse location.

Is the a checkbox or setting available for this?

Or does Houdini not work that way?

in the viewport, with the object selected, press Space + B

place you mouse over the location you was to tumble around
SPACE + z
