Hello World,
I did finally get the program installed, but figured I would put my notes here in case anyone else runs into anything. Apologies for not documenting them as they happened so here is from memory (built the box the same day so was tuckered out):
Downloaded apprentice version for Mountain Lion - houdini-12.1.33-macosx_x86_64_gcc4.2_10.7.dmg
1. Installed > prompted that I needed XQuartz.app so got that
2. Tried further installation and wouldn't connect to name server “Error could not get a non-commercial license for version 12.1” > had to open Houdini Shell and manually retrieve and enter server name
3. Upon Launching Houdini FX > it opens in about 9 seconds > see screen shot attachment, missing icons
Notes: version 12.1.33. Seeing as how we are now at OS X 10.8.1, should the downloaded file be updated instead of reading 10.7?
I will follow through with any needed bug report/ diagnostic files in the morning, just wanted to put this down while I still remember
Thank you for any assistance given.
Best Regards,
Jonathon

Of course not one minute after submitting this under the Apprentice forum I check the General forum and find: http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_forum&Itemid=172&page=viewtopic&t=26413 [sidefx.com]
I will check out those suggestions.

Reinstalling the XQuartz app (I had already installed it since Houdini prompted me to when I did not have it, but I decided to reinstall it from the location given in forum post by mod) made about 7 more tab icons appear, but still many missing. From reading other posts its looks like it may be a driver issue. I just hope it isn't since the box is a fresh install and I'm pretty sure most recent video card drivers. From other posts it looks like AMD cards have issues sometimes. I have the apprentice version because I'm a student… students usually can't afford $400 video cards… here is the one I have. So even though I had previously installed xQuartz, then installed over it again (with the same version but different site), I went ahead and deleted xQuartz and reinstalled it. I now have all my buttons woohoo! I am still running the AMD 6870, but won't know if I'm having performance issues since I have nothing to compare it to. Damn, all the talk about openGL 2.1 and catalyst rollbacks had me looking at some nVidia 670s, now I don't have to go down that road. On to my homework now!
(I'll get around to fixing the “help” bug later)
ps. Isn't this a lovely conversation with myself?
