Hi guys,

I'm a SI user recently migrated to Houdini for simulations. I'm trying to do instances in Houdini. Very simple geometry, around 50 triangles, instances on a million points. Surely I'm doing something really wrong, because the time it takes before the render start is ridiculous. It takes around 30 mins. The same geo render instantly in Arnold and softimage. I'm instancing the packed geometry on the packed particles using the instance sop node. From a network path. On screen it seems to work fine. But when it try to render it hangs for almost half an hour before starting a render. Any clues what is going wrong ? It almost look like if it try to build the entire geo before rendering …

Thanks

Are you using PBR or Micropolygon rendering?

I tried both … doesn't make a difference. It shouldn't take long right to render 1 instance of let say a cube, on 1 million points, moving all over the place ? Arnold do a way better job at it and I don't understand what I set wrong on Mantra to bust it.

How are you doing the instancing? An Instance object with Fast Point Instancing?
