I needed the select by normal feature since a long time. I was following the threads about it with other people expressing their need of the feature. So I was really happy when I heard it is implemented in Houdini 17.5 . Now I finally got the chance to test it, and I am dissapointed to say that it's not completely well implemented. It's still a great help, but here is my imput of what it would make it much better, and these are things that I think could very easily be implemented.
This is how the feature works in max. You can select the whole sphere, without the extrusion with one click.
This is how it works in Houdini. Apparently in Houdini the select by normal detects the diversion from the starting normal, and in max it detects the relative diversion. It's a small difference, but I think the relative diversion makes a lot more sence, or atleast it could be done with a toggle.
And the second thing is that when select by normal is enabled, it is not allowed to make a box selection by dragging. If this was possible, you could easily select a couple of regions with similar normals withing the region, but different from region to region with one drag.
I hope this makes sence, again this feature is still quite helpful, but it could easily be made much better in my oppinion
