Naach0 f we could select multiple parms so you can easily write the same thing in one go, that alone could be a biigg improvement in UIX. just saying. ... Just the ability to lock multiple parms in one go is a HUGEEEE improvement. there is a lot of repetitive writing/clicking in houdini rigth now. Sidefx needs a UIX team ASAP
you can use Channel List for all that, just saying
oh i didnt know, thanks. still, a lot of clicks for something so necesary/useful, like i said, they need an UIX team ASAP.
Also sneakpeek is OUT !! DD
after a couple of months, i can finally close this tab. i'll see you guys in the "Any rumours of Houdini 20?" thread.
So the new vellum fluids is basically pop fluids in a better container, I was going to post wondering if that was it before the preview hit! All of the new stuff looks fantastic. It looks like I need to properly learn Solaris if the asset manager and scene building is a good as it seems. I was going to use blender with it's new asset manager to build my scenes, but it'd be nice to do it in one place.

I completely ditched blender after 6 years, this release sure convinces me that I made the right choice!
Until Houdini has modeling tools like Blender, I'll never leave! The best for me is a combination of both. Blender for the simple stuff and modeling and Houdini for the rest.

You can model the exact same way in Houdini as you can in Blender, and then some, you just don't know how, the new pie menu in Blender comes directly from Houdini, as do the new geometry nodes, which is a pale copy of the geometry nodes that comes with Houdini, and at least in Houdini when you create a sphere it stays parametric, in Blender as soon as you deselect it there is no way to modify its parameters, which is insane in 2021!
Oh man, SO much good stuff! I almost feel like this release was designed for me personally. Curve tool, improved grooming, vellum grain brush... The info on Karma was a bit light, but I'm hearing really good things about it. If all of this is even half as good as it looks I'll be back to Houdini full time. Can't wait for the presentations next week!
I was about to say that, only with a bit more enthusiasm CURVEEES! Also improved VEX wrangling UX... always wondered why such an important part of H is so crappy.
Anyway anyone know if XPU is OCL or CUDA based?
Swaabs examples look decent for the render time, anyone know the machine specs?
hMonkey Anyway anyone know if XPU is OCL or CUDA based?
Judging from their example of using an Nvidia GPU, I assume it's CUDA/Optix based.....oh well!
OCL performance is much lower than Optix/Cuda. I hoped for years that it would even be remotely comparable but that never happened.
Other than that: just an unbelievable release again. What a coincidence that they have a full scene import into stage now, just two days ago I tried to better understand that part of H only to endlessly wonder why they made it so hard to access data you already created in the object context...
I only hoped they'd put a bit more emphasis on animation features first rather than motion capture. Sidefx must let go of the idea that Houdini is just a bridging software or application for post processing, that period is coming to an end, so, please, more emphasis on creation!

Exactly! I don't get this hate. These two softwares currently are the big shining stars. I don't care about their communities but what we can do with them. I'm very excited about CyclesX and Eevee or that new realtime compositor. Also, there's no feature like Grease pencil inside of any 3D software, it's so much fun to use, I bought a display tablet just to do 2D animation! And don't forget the 3D tracker in Blender. Both packages can be very good companions!

Eevee and Grease Pencil are the only two real innovations in blender 2.8 IMHO, and its not hate, its only facts, for what it does, Houdini outshines blender in every possible way, as I said, you can model the exact same way in Houdini as you can in blender, and then some, and its 100% non destructive, while in blender its mostly destructive, blender is mostly hype, because hype is what drives donations!

Actually, you cant, what I meant is you, cant model, in Blender, Cinema 4D or Maya like you could in Houdini. Houdini has a unique approach in DM and sometimes it can be a blast and sometimes it can be a pain. But like you said, you really need to know how to utilize all these nodes and workflows to be able to enjoy it. I definitely enjoy modeling in Houdini and have no plans to model anywhere else anytime soon. With some more improvements and additional new features, it can be a super solid package for DM.

The hate portion was not directed against you, sorry for the misunderstanding. But it's something that I read elsewhere very often. Let's not confuse Blender with it's users. I don't see how the foundation is pushing the hype. Like with a lot of things it's driven by a loud group of annoying users.
Anyways. I just think that Blender has quite a few bits that puts itself apart from Houdini and can supplement it in many ways. I'll use it and keep my mouth closed
