Maybe I use too many programs but I swore Houdini's Selection Tool had a symmetry mode…
Am I brain farting and can't find the option or does symmetrical selection not exist in Houdini 16?
Selection Tool Symmetry Exist?

Just ran into this issue, trying to get some modeling done in Houdini. And I must say, coming from XSI, modeling in Houdini is like painting your house with a toothpick.
Houdini is nice as a huge plugin for special fx, but for every day stuff it slows you down to a snails pace.
Lets hope basic stuff like this will get some attention soon.

In my opinion, selection should be treated as a temporary node. This way you can design your own "Expand/Shrink/Mirror/Whatever Selection" shelf tool. When you use another tool after selection, e.g. polyextrude, the temporary selection node "collapse" into polyextrude's group parameter. Similarly, you can restore the temporary selection node from any sop node's group parameter.
At least that's how I expect it works. Does it make sense? Is there a similar RFE?

I came here looking for a solution for this problem and this comment hit the nail on the head. Houdini is awesome but man, there are things that are maddening, especially when it comes to modeling tools.
