If I select, say, faces on a piece of geometry then those faces are highlighted yellow.

The problem is that the selection highlight disappears when i press the 'view' button (the camera icon down the left) to navigate around the scene/object so I cannot see which faces I have selected. This is a re-install of houdini on windows 10.

Does anyone know what could be causing this issue?

It's probably because you're explicitly switching from Select mode to View mode. Instead, you can temporarily invoke View mode by holding Alt (like most DCCs) or spacebar and the selection highlighting will persist.
