Work with big files

Hey guys,

I noticed when a houdini file gets bigger, houdini tends to freeze much more often.
My current scene file (Houdini 20.5.370) contains ten separate shots, its size is about 25 MB. And now when I only want to select one of these shot networks in the top hierarchy level it immediately doesn't respond anymore. That's although neither my CPU nor RAM is used to capacity, so I guess this can't be a hardware problem.

Of course there is a huge number of artists in the industry who have much bigger projects than I do. Do they always split all their files per each individual shot? Or do you know yet another way that may simplify optimazation between the shots to deal with this?

When I end up with a heavy scene, I make a new HIP file that's just for rendering the caches.

25mb is fairly small as far as scene sizes go. It shouldn't be freezing when selecting some top level parent node just because it contains a lot of nodes. I do not experience this personally.

You could always using the performance monitor to check which nodes are taking time. Also you can check the network speed/stability if you are working on NAS.

Thanks for your experiences. I also think that 25 MB shouldn't be that much of a problem.

Even the performance monitor seemed to freeze when I tested that. I figured its values are getting updated every 60 - 90 seconds in my scene. Actually there's a lonely leader in terms of time consumption.

Sometimes the loading of that mesh seems to be a big problem. But I can't tell why, its filesize is only 7 MB per frame. It's always the same mesh with animated Cd.

Currently I'm lucky enough to have the right objects selected and visible in the scene view. But I'll certainly becom desperate when this happens again.

Where are the files that you're loading located? Are they on a local disk, or over the network?

All the cached files are stored on my internal M.2 SSD.
