I would but there are some significant bugs that I want to hear from SESI about first. They're the kind of problems that can literally take it from looking pretty good, to looking completely horrible just by hitting the wrong toggle.
Hopefully I'll hear back from them today and I'll upload the file then.

Just wanted to share some testsrenders i did a while ago in H10.
Only used shelftools and some simple lights

1keylight and 4 filllights if i remember. Shadowmaps and micropolygon.
And offcourse good linear workflow!(thats how you get nice renders )

For short hair i think Houdini works very good. Long hair is a bit more pain

Good Morning everyone. Thanks for the imagery and discussion, and that is a very nice bear. I even like MarcH's render, although it is merely a lowly static furry ball. :wink: I know SESI is listening and I have every confidence they'll apply similar thinking to fur that they have applied to the new mantra surface shader and PBR.
MarcH, when you do get the bugs sorted I would love to learn how you achieved that look. It's a good step in the right direction.

Friday evening here, tired after whole day of working. But really, we all learn and I agree that all 3d apps need some enhancements, that is true, but you cannot just try to create something within 5 minutes and complain that company should change its tool because you cannot get a good result.
It is a problem of a user but not software in this case. As other users showed - there is no problem to create a nice fur look in reasonable time.
And like I have said before, after different package, you probably expect same approach, but it is not like that.
If You can create nice object in 10 minutes using Lightwave, but after 10 minutes with Zbrush u cannot get even a box, that doesn't mean that Zbrush should be changed.
If You need out of box result with easy setup, I think that poser and bryce is your way. In all other cases you just need to spend some time on that, this is quite complex software that comes with big user manual.

I think I owe SESI and the participants of this thread an apology. My experience interacting with the Houdini community has been so positive up until now that I felt quite comfortable just coming out with a criticism, confident that it would spark an interesting debate. It did that, but it also spawned some fairly vitriolic responses and obviously upset some people. I blame myself for not realizing that among the Houdini community, just as in any other software community, there are always a few elitist zealots. I should have approached the problem in a more considered way. It is not my intention to cause hard feelings, so I hope you will all accept that apology so we can move on with the interesting part of the discussion.

It is not about feelings, I am just a normal user of this tool same as others. (I am also user of Maya, 3dmax). Problem was that u got here with compliments about software after 5minutes of work. Other users showed you that this is possible to achieve without any ‘high tech’ knowledge of a tool.
My personal opinion is that success is in good research and not with presets.

I think SESI would have extracted your intended point: a better looking default setup can go a long way to instilling confidence and suggesting a productive workflow.

When all is said and done, I got the same result as you after doing what I thought would work. If I didn't know better then I may have given up and moved on… so there definitely is merit to the discussion. But yeah, if it's going to be too heated then perhaps the time to move on has come .

Yeah, but Softimage have C++ and C# SDK and 4 other scripting languages to choose from. Why not Houdini ?
I really like to see C# HDK port. The same speed, no memory managment, easy as Python. Clear like crystal code. Easy to implement threading (This year new implementation it's two ? three lines counting with include to make something multithreaded). Dream of a TD.

Nightmare of a TD!
Shared Object Model present in XSI to allow this plethora of languages from which JScript is perhaps the only usable is a root of all evil in this otherwise decent application. God save us from this.
