In one of your video tutorials, which I am trying to follow, I am having the following problem getting the interface to show the parameter settings above the main view area..

You cannot see the controls in the Operation control bar because you are not using the handle tool - you have the select tool active. click on the handle tool (4 down from select tool on left hand toolbar) then you will get interactivity in the viewport for painting and see the parameters in the bar above.

Changing the values in the parameter pane is the same thing but without the handle tool you won't be able to paint in the viewport.
