I actually managed to get Houdini up and running on my Macbook Air, but I can't really figure out how to emulate the middle mouse button using the trackpad. Right mouse button is emulated correctly.

Is my only option to invest in a 3 button mouse?

Thanks!

A 3 button mouse is required for the RMB menu.

two fingers zooms very nicely, and a two-fingered-click works well for right mouse button.

having to single-finger click the mouspad for rotate isnt as easy as it could be (quite a solid click required). thus if you could implement rotate with a 3 finger action, and pan with 4 fingers - or something like that, it would be a real joy to use the trackpad…. better than a mouse. something like:

1 finger click - left mouse button
2 finger click - right mouse button

1 finger action - move mouse pointer
2 finger action - zoom
3 finger action - rotate
4 finger action - pan

This programme might help you: http://www.pqrs.org/tekezo/macosx/keyremap4macbook/ [pqrs.org]

It seems that you can remap middle mouse button to either the fn key or the right command button. The former didn't really work for me, but the latter did seem to do the job ok.

Be interested to hear if there are any better solutions. Particularly since it would be good to be able to remap it to a more convenient location than the right command button.

I don#t see any option in that remapper program to remap either of those keys to right mouse click, can you explain further how you did it?

you could use ‘BetterTouchTool’ or ‘MagicPrefs’, both will give you a middle button and some other things too. Works fine with Houdini.

My solution is to set the environment variable HOUDINI_MMB_PAN to 0. Then you can use right mouse for panning and the scrolling for zoom.

Here is the website for Better Touch Tools:
http://boastr.net/ [boastr.net]

It has a wide range of options including middle clicks.

It's ridiculous that sidefx has no interface wher you can map a short-cut for mac users for the middle-mouse click on the trackpad.

Middle Mouse Click for Magic Mouse didn't work using MagicPrefs with OS X Yosemite until I looked into System Preferences-> Mission Control & disabled Middle Mouse Button for showing the Dashboard. Afterwards the MMB worked as expected in Houdini.

Just a heads up.

I ended up using Karabiner (formerly KeyRemap4MacBook). I never use the right command (clover) key, so I remapped that to be middle click. I find that easier than the triple click of BetterTouchTool.

Just install, run, from its ugly initial dialog use the search bar at the top to find

command_r to middleclick

enable it, done.

To get X window system on my macbook pro I use XQuartz 2.7.7
and simply select under preferences in x11 to emulate three button mouse.
(with “option+click” to get middle and “command+click” to get third mouse button).

This three button mouse makes it possible to use xfig drawing program!

In case anyone's still interested in this (I am, so found this thread), I've had luck with two things on OSX 10.10 Yosemite:

1) MagicPrefs. In the prefs, I set three-finger-click to Middle Click. Then a 3-finger-click gives me the pan (right term?) cursor in the viewport and I can either drag all three fingers to to the panning, or sometimes I have to use a fourth finger to do the movement. Not sure why it's inconsistent.

2) I have an old (at least 10 years now) Microsoft Trackball Explorer trackball, and the Microsoft Mouse (Microsoft IntelliPoint) system prefs works in OSX still. Set the Wheel Button to “Handled by Mac OS” and it works in Houdini as 3rd button. Sometimes after launching Houdini it doesn't work but going to MS Mouse prefs and reassigning Wheel Button to “Handled by Mac OS” makes it work again.
