I am trying to find a section in the help that explains the relationship between attributes and the local variables used to access the values. It seems an area that confuses people new to houdini. I would love to be able to point them to a clear explanation :-)

In our pipeline, imported poly models can contain a lot of attributes and on import the mapping is not created automatically, so people need to know about this early on unfortunately.

It think this may improve your workflow a little bit, haven't tried though…
Have a look at http//www.houdinitools.com/
In otls section check VarMap Sop, hope it's the thing you were looking for.
