It is not very clear on how to do an upgrade. Do we download the newest and it will detect the previous version and do what ever it needs? While I loss any of my setting and files?

No, installing a new build will not modify your old builds. You can keep as many old builds as you like. It is up to you to uninstall builds that you no longer use.
