I am trying to remove the bottom half of a sphere but i am having problems selecting only part of the sphere. Does anyone know how to do this?

You have probably created a primitive sphere, which consist with a single point (it's a parametric geometry). Change its type to polygon mesh to select particular faces. If perfect hemisphere is what you're after, try to use NURBS sphere and append Carve SOP.
