I think that a new display mode for geometry, at least at SOP level could be very useful.
Apart from Smooth Shaded, or flat shaded, a semi transparent shaded mode could be great, this is very useful when you are for example, modeling using subds, and you have you subd OP in template mode and the previous operator in display, the template is shaded and the display is wireframe, many times one wants to select a point that is hidden by the shaded geo, a semi transparent mode that allows to select hidded points, edges, etc .. but still allows to see the shaded geo could be very useful in these situations.
