Hi, all!

There's 2 things I wanted to clarify, hopefully with your help:

- What would you recommend to watch a propos of rigging a model from scratch?
- Then - I don't get it yet - should I use KineFX or APEX to do the animation?
I understand that one (KIneFX) is the part of the other (APEX) now.

Thank you!

Neither is very production ready for character animation. So if you make a living as an animator, the answer is Maya.

If you just want to learn something new and prepare for future Houdini versions, it's made clear that SideFX considers the APEX way is the future. It's unlikely that Rig Pose's UI and Rig VOP nodes will get any more major updates.

Frankly I won't call KineFX a part of APEX. APEX is a different beast. APEX has a few built-in tools to read from / write to KineFX skeletons and that's it.

If you want to animate something very soon, use KineFX. Depending on your needs it'll do the job very well - it might not be considered "production ready" for character animation, in that you probably won't find that work in a studio using it. But for indie projects or smaller/freelance gigs it's great. There's a foundation course here which is a decent place to start learning: https://www.sidefx.com/tutorials/foundations-rig-fur-dude-with-kinefx/ [www.sidefx.com]

If you want to start learning how to rig something to animate in the future, I agree with kodra it's probably worth getting straight into APEX, it's earlier and buggier but very promising and hopefully will be getting more complete over the next couple Houdini versions.
