I tried adding F12 as my hotkey render button, but it does not seem to work. Is that a reserved key? Is my assignment ok?

I am not sure what you mean by the last render performed? DoI have to manually issue a render before the F12 hotkey will work? If so, that does not seem to work either…

Thanks for the explanation. After I posted this I did make the connection that lights and cameras are on the same tool shelf so it does make some sense.
