character deformation speed ups 2011年9月10日18:20
Hi,
I am interested in rigging in Houdini and speed of deformation. I have set up few poses in standard cartoon character and I am not impressed, the speed is no better than in Maya or LightWave.
Simply, during the playback I have something between every 3th - 7th frame (on very fast machine). I have not found way to disable one of the viewports; when I switch from 2 to 1 viewport view in animation desktop my zoom changes! So I just slide character away in one of the viewports, but I am not sure if this is speeding up anything.
When I drop second character Houdini still uses one processor, so there is no multi-threading in OpenGL or maths in the rig, is there any way to turn it on?
Simply I am looking for a tool that will allow my animator to not generate playblasts after every change, something real time. Is standard cartoon character so complicated that it is not possible? I am missing some settings? The geometry looks quite smooth, even after changing it with the slider to low resolution. I would love to hear from someone that uses Houdini for character animation.
Thx in advance.

real world scale vs. Houdini units 2011年9月10日17:46
I just realised that the grid is 8x8, that is just wrong, or can I change it somewhere, I tried to look for it in help, but with no luck.
Anyway, I build all my assets in real scale units (you know, in other application), what should I go for in the Houdini.
Shall I get used to idea I will have to rescale my assets every time I want to re-use them? What do you guys do? As most of 3D that I am doing is happening in real world situations I would like to keep it consistent. Especially that I have some amount of models that I will just convert to Houdini.
Cartoon character is 31 units high, will it work OK if I will decide that one unit is 1m and rescale it down 25 times? And actually I am not able to find the scale box any more, so can I rescale characters easly, or I got it wrong? lol
I own Maxwell and it is recommended to use real world units in this plug-in. What is Houdini approach to this?
So what artist using Houdini do? How they model? How do they create assets?
