In Part 5, we will rig the Left Leg. The leg will have both Forward and Inverse Kinematics and ability to twist both the upper and lower leg.

Mr Goldfarb thank you very much.
I have watch some studio that made character animation in Houdini and I want to do it too.
You and SideFX having made this way more easy for new Houdini's artists.
I believe in few time the base of new user will grow a lot.
Let's make character animation in Houdini ;-)

This is great Michael! We really need more rigging tutorials like this to help us reduce time investment in learning basic things we already know in other software.
    Looking forward for more!

    Cheers,
    V

Just finished the leg tutorial, thanks for it. Some parts were a bit tricky and needed to be repeated. However the leg part was quick to do. Waiting for the foot tutorial. Have done some rigging in Maya and Blender previously and need to relearn a lot. These tutorials are very helpful and much appreciated. Thanks Mr GoldFarb and SideFX.

P.S. Am considering Indie but study this with Apprentice. Had a major issue with proxy creation until the following was understood. When preparing the proxy meshes the Edit node will cause a mesh to "explode" when the file is reloaded. Have not read any note about such limitations in Apprentice. It keeps recurring so other nodes had to be used for proxy meshes or it has to be exported. CentOS7, Houdini (Apprentice) FX Version 16.5.323, Nvidia, >80 GB RAM.

not sure what would cause that - can you post in the forums and add the file, I'll take a look.

Have been doing the following: tommy mesh versions, ignorantly fiddled with the Asset Manager's "Save Operator Definitions to Hip File" and "Save Definitions of Unlocked Assets to Hip File", testing mesh export formats, and updated/reinstalled Apprentice several times too. Have not really understood the Type Properties "Apply/Accept" results. The proxy mesh shapes were not locked (like in your tutorial) so they could be flexibly updated any time using groups from Bounding Object (shapes). Somewhere the data flow was broken, several times, probably some kind of mesh cache (unintentionally) took over with wrong or outdated vertex ordering. Luckily, am currently using the HDA definition on disk and not file, and everything is working correctly. Also the various versions of the tommy mesh can now be exchanged without any exploding meshes which is good. Surprisingly, was not able to recreate the error with the current state of the file. Think that something happened with the Houdini Asset settings somehow but can not be sure at all. If and when exploding meshes happen again without obvious reason I will try to post some file in the forums. It's very capable software. Thanks!

Just run into a little bug following the tutorial in Houdini 17.0.506. IK would move only the last bone, the first one would remain stuck. Looks like constraints and IK don't like each other (surprise!)
Here is how I solved it:
    1) Add the IK to the bones BEFORE you add the constraints for FK controllers (the "simple blend" constr. on both bones)
    2) When adding IK, accept selection by "right click + Accept selection". Don't hit "ENTER" to accept selection.

Happy rigging to ya all, who did that great tut to that point
And thank you Mr. Goldfarb - you did a great job, recording this tutorial!
