Most files suffixed with .pref can now be globally disabled if a copy of the desired settings is found in the HOUDINI_PATH with .nosave appended. Only files with the .nosave suffix will be read in the HOUDINI_PATH. Otherwise, old behaviour is still maintained by reading from $HOME/houdini6.1 and saving to $HOME/houdini6.1

There's a new output driver which can be used to create archives for rendering. It's basically like a super-set of the geometry output driver. The output driver can create an archive by merging the geometry of several separate objects.

Archives can be generated for mantra or for RIB streams.

Mantra archives are simply .bgeo files. Care must be taken when archiving multiple objects with regards to attribute handling. All objects are merged into a single piece of geometry for output to the archive.

Unlike the geometry output driver, the RIB archive generation can output archives containing multiple attribute blocks, nested archives, sub-division surface (and other geometry controls), curves, and most standard RIB features found in the RenderMan output driver.
