There is a new button on the selection toolbar which changes the selection connectivity between { Viewport, 3D, UV }. This button is respected by the point, edge, primitive, and vertex connected selections.

The connectivity types are as follows: 3D - uses shared point topology to determine connectedness UV - uses vertex UVs to determine connectivity Viewport - connectivity is context sensitive. In a vertex UV viewport, use UV, otherwise use 3D

The default value is Viewport. Feel the power!
