Houdini Main Changelogs

5.5.30

The behaviour of the "Visibility" masks in the RenderMan output driver has changed subtly.

For the "Photon Visibility" parameter, if no string is specified, not photon visibility attributes will be output to the RIB stream. If a mask is specified, all objects which match the mask will have "visibility photon" turned on, while objects which do not match the mask will have the visibility turned off.

"Shadow Visibility": If an object is specified in any of the shadow masks of the contributing light sources, OR if the object matches the shadow mask specified in the output driver, then visibility will be turned on. Otherwise shadow visibility will be turned off.

"Trace Visibility": If an object is specified in any of the reflection masks of any objects, OR if the object matches the trace mask specified in the output driver, then visibility will be turned on. Otherwise trace visibility will be turned off. For Entropy, this is the "reflection" visibility attribute. For prman 11, this is the "trace" visibility attribute.

Initial support for prman11 feature set has been added:

  • Object reflection masks are used to determine ray-tracingsubsets in RIB generation.
  • The "Visibility Trace" parameter can be used to augment the"visibility" "trace".

If the mask is specified in the output driver, then objects matching the mask will automatically have "trace" turned on. If there is no pattern specified, or if objects do not match the pattern, then all other ray-tracing masks (shadow masks on lights and reflection masks on other objects) are used to determine whether the object should have "trace" turned on.

For example:

  • "Visibility Trace" mask in output driver is set to "geo*"
  • Object "boat" has a reflection mask of "sky, water".
  • No other objects have relfection/shadow masks set.
  • Object "sun" would not have the "trace" flag turned on.
  • Object "water" would have the "trace" flag turned on.(as it's reflected in the object "boat").
  • Object "geo3" would have the "trace" flag turned on (bythe "Visibility Trace" parameter in the output driver)
  • A new parameter "Visibility Photon" is used to determinewhether objects are visible in photon map generation. Ifthe photon
  • There are parameters in the output driver which control someaspects of global illumination/photon mapping.

The dithering algorithm was changed in mantra. Mach bandind should be less severe now. However, images will be quantized differently now (incompatible with previous versions of mantra).

There was an error with the Houdini display driver for RenderMan that would have caused crashes. This has been fixed. The Entropy display driver and mental ray display drivers would not have been affected by this bug.
