To the Houdini Community,


Like all of you, we’ve been monitoring the evolving global impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). We are taking the situation very seriously, and have taken steps here at SideFX to safe-guard our customers, staff and partners. Our team is well-equipped with online systems and processes to continue to service you throughout these unprecedented times.

Regarding the use of Houdini, we want to make sure that everyone’s use and enjoyment of it stays as smooth as possible during these challenging times. Here are a few of the ways we’re making sure that happens:

WORKING FROM HOME

At SideFX, we've made the decision to have our staff work from home - and we know that many of our commercial clients, educational institutions, and partners have had to do the same. To assist with accessing commercial licenses from a home workstation, we have this advice:

Using VPN to Connect to Your Network:

Accessing your studio license server using a VPN is the best way to ensure that you are able to use your Commercial licenses from a home machine.


Remote Desktop:

Remote desktop solutions such as Teradici, VNC, Teamviewer, AnyDesk and Windows Remote Desktop may be considered. Note that performance may vary. NVIDIA Quadro and AMD Radeon Pro cards have been known to work with Remote Desktop on Windows.

NVIDIA has created a special tool for GeForce GPUs to accelerate Windows Remote Desktop streaming with GeForce drivers R440 or later.

Installing Licenses Locally:

If accessing the on-premise license server over a VPN is not an option, you also have the ability to move licenses from the server to the home workstation.

Of course, Houdini Indie and the free Houdini Apprentice are already designed to be used on workstations at home, and are a good resource tool for learning Houdini at home.

EVENTS, PRESENTATIONS & LEARNING MATERIAL

With social-distancing quickly becoming the global mandate, physical events have had to be cancelled or shifted to digital-only. We are currently developing several online events to continue to foster the knowledge exchange between experienced Houdini artists and the community worldwide.

The first of these is the replacement for our participation at the 2020 Game Developers Conference - which was supposed to have taken place in San Francisco the week of March 16-20. We have a full lineup of educational gamedev presentations and “Made With Houdini” gameplay scheduled for March 25-27 - more information is available here:

Especially over the past few years, we have invested heavily in Houdini learning material - webinars, tutorial series, expert artist presentations, etc. This will continue at full speed, and we have lots of valuable learning material lined up for the rest of the year. We understand these actions are only a small part of the big picture in our quickly shifting industry, but we feel they are in the right direction of supporting our community in these challenging times. We’ll continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they arise.
