Hi,

Could someone please explain to me how Z-DEPTH is calculated and who controls it? I tried to figure out how it is working inside Mantra => Images => Extra image planes => (Pz), but i seem completely lost :? I used z-depth in Vray and i know that is controlled by the camera… I need to measure two distances from the camera. The first one is the point at which you want the DOF to start and the second to be the point at which you want the DOF to end. This will determine the grayscale value

Any Idea?

Z Depth (PZ) in Houdini is 32 bit , So we have distance of the camera to objects with this pass , So it's don't have any related to Focus Distance or other camera parameters. It should be same on any different situations.

Focus Distance parameter is useful when we wanna add Depth of Field to our rendered image , in this case Focus Distance define area of the Focus on our rendered image , not grayscale Pz pass.

and Pz or Z Depth is useful when we wanna add this Depth of Field in the Compositing , (like Nuke).

If your meant is where is Focus Distance and F-Stop , so they are in the Camera parameters –> Sampling , But they can't control Pz pass.
