Houdini 15.5 crashing when creating clouds from points

Hi everyone,

I want to create some clouds forming and am encountering consistent crashes whenever I try the following:

  • Brand new scene
  • Create Location Particles, birth rate to 50, go up to obj level
  • Create new Geometry node
  • Inside Geometry node, create ObjectMerge and bring in location particles (select OUT null, Merge Into This Object option)
  • Create Cloud and connect Object Merge
  • Set Cloud Source To ‘Point Cloud Model’
  • Watch the RAM shoot up and then Houdini crashes

The strange this is that this will work as long as I'm not on the first frame of the animation.
The moment I try this while on frame 1 or I scrub back, Houdini starts to think really hard, eats up all my RAM and then crashes my PC. This happens even if I set this to 1 particle.

Am I doing something silly somewhere without knowing? I tried this on multiple computers, Houdini version 15.5.673.

If you change it to ‘By Size’ it works fine
