Who is using RenderMan? Why or why not?

What is 3Delight? Their website is scant on details. Is it a new GPU renderer?

Here you go mate. 3Delight NSI [www.3delight.com]
It's been around almost 20 yrs, was a Reyes style micro polygon renderer that(copied and beat a lot the times)
whatever it was that Renderman was doing. Then it implemented a path tracer, so both options were there, but
it was showing it's age being bound to the renderman API, so they threw everything out. Started from scratch
building a path tracer with a new API, which is NSI, designed to be lightweight with minimal function calls.
Along with this, was that interactive rendering be a top priority, with OSL shading at the core, not as an
add on. So built on this, is where we are today. The most modern renderer on the market, fastest volumes,
displacement with NO pre-tesselation BS, de-coupled shading and pixel sampling, and using all that knowledge
from the past 20yrs to make things as quick as possible in a path traced world.
Cheers
Lewie

It also has a free version, up to 12 cores. That's better than Pixar Renderman. The cloud version should be extremely competitive too.
Its been a long wait for the Houdini version and will be well recieved.

We are indeed pushing to get some very interesting tech into the hands of the Houdini crowd (efficient packed primitives, *fast* volumes, multi-light, cloud rendering, etc.). We open sourced the plug-in so everyone can follow:

Many things to finalize still, but will be very usable before the end of this year, that's for sure.

Thank you very much for sharing this with us! 3Delight sounds really promising and I would very much like to try it out even now.
Unfortunately I can't figure out how to build it for Windows. Or better: As an artist my knowledge of building code is rather lacking In the ReadMe on GitLab it is written that it was not tested under Windows. But it is possible you said? Would you mind updating some information for Windows there as soon it is tested?

One not previously mentioned reason for using Renderman is their VCM integrator / bidirectional path tracing. I will need to render large amounts of interior scenes with mostly indirect light soon and would be great if someone with experience on this topic can enlighten me on how it compares to Mantra photon mapping for instance.

3Delight for Houdini, although still unannounced, is part of the package since a couple weeks.
You can get it at: https://www.3delight.com/download. [www.3delight.com]

Great!
Works out of the box on Windows, MacOS crashes on rendering a sequence, and, Linux has no shaders in the tab menu.
Terminal shows though:
