Im looking into buying a floating Houdini FX or Core license, but I don't really want to drop $7k all at once. If I buy Core can I upgrade to FX at a later date or would I have to purchase a separate FX license?

You can ask SESI directly they don't bite.

I've asked them a few times in the past week via email and support ticket :/ They may not bite, but they're not answering either haha

on discord there are SESI developers maybe you can ask them.

Ya, they're usually really good about it. Maybe they're on vacation or something? Thanks for the discord link, I'll give it a shot.

Got an answer:

That can definitely be done, no need to purchase a net new license.

There are different costs, however, depending if your license is currently node-locked (tied to a single workstation), or floating (LAL license, which can be situated on a server).
The upgrade costs are below:

Core (Node-Locked) to FX (Node-locked) = $2,695

Core LAL (floating) to FX LAL (floating) = $4,195

So it looks like it costs a little more overall, but you're able to spread out the cost if your end goal is an FX license
