A fuse sounds like it should work, but it doesn't actually connect primitives such as curves. It only makes vertices from nearby points share a single point, with the extra points removed. The primitives composed of those vertices are unchanged.
There is a special tool for connecting curve segments into a single curve, polypath. It finds nearby curves and joins them into a single curve where possible.
