How to increase sim perf? crazy specs, terrible performance

Hi ~ I've just built a new PC with simulations in mind (explosions and fire specifically for this example) and I feel like it didn't do anything to speed up my Houdini simulations. I'm guessing Houdini is being gated by a setting somewhere that I don't know about.

My new machine is an AMD 7950x with 128gb DDR5 and a radeon rx 7900XTX gpu

I'm trying to sim out this scene and A) I feel like it's chugging when it shouldn't but more importantly B) I only have 3 frames of scrub back which feels absolutely pathetic for 128gb of ram

This is also simulating onto a 2TB 990 pro

Any guidance? I feel like this scene file should just be annihilated by my computer

Your cache memory settings on the dopnet might be too low. The volumes also have to be loaded into gpu ram every frame so that takes a bit of time too.

I changed my "Max" cache usage in Windows -> Cache Manager from 5000 to 120000 and that did the trick, thank you!

I would also suggest doing some file caching, especially if you have a lot of things being calculated at once.
For your viewport preview you could also try this:
