Hello all, this is my first post on the houdini forums

I am doing a VFX course and this block I got a lot of freedom to choose a topic of my own to research.

I am trying to replicate a scene from Gravity, where a space station explodes during reentry. This shot specifically: https://youtu.be/6Cy119JKh_Y?si=LCzLXsxKZ25S-0hf&t=117 [youtu.be]

In my scene, the module of the station is spinning. I have ripped it apart with vellum to get bending metal, but it does not maintain the rotational velocity of the pieces. The vellum simulation which starts at frame 35 acts as if the module is stationary.

I asked my teachers for feedback and they reccomended me to do this with an RBD sim, as it would save a lot of trouble. Now when I try an RBD sim the RBD does not respond to collision geometry, and it has appearantly many issues with the UV.

I am really curious what causes these things and want to learn why this happens and how to prevent/fix it.

Can any of you help me out with this? I have attached the scene and tried to clean it up.

Thank you!
