tanks for the answer J.C.
I did what you told me deleted icons folder and then rebooted but Houdini doesn't regenerate an new folder Icons.
Neither dos it show any icons in the interface.
it's strange because other programm's do, so i should just work.
Maybe it's the way my grhapic card antialias the Icon pictures ?
If i try and open the individual icons in Ubuntu i get a error report saying no suported format for .pic
,pic is native to houdini am i correct ?
Or might that be the source of the problem?
./houdini/houdini/config/Icons

thnx Probbins,
but yeah thats one of the first things i did and it doesn't seam to change anything.
it's weired because Houdini is the only application experiencing this,
And Houdini works fine, it's fast and reliable only,,,,, no icons >_* ?
also find it weired that no one else when i search with Google or on Sidefx website has this problem.

Ermm…does that not answer your question? Permissions are pooched. Houdini's trying to write to that file(because it has to!), it can't, so it can't save the icons.
Note: there's been a bunch of posts in the last while about methodology wrt installing Houdini on Linux , and some of it is nuts. More often than not, Ubuntu seems to cause a lot of problems because the whole ‘no root account’ mentality seems to instill the notion that applications should be installed in home directories. Another reason I hate Ubuntu - in making things ‘easy’ it's mimicking Vista and tries to do away with the notion of a root account. Madness. Anyway, that's a big assumption on my part, might not be correct in this case, but the proper procedure should be:
Install Houdini as root(sudo houdini.install on Ubuntu). Install it in the default location, i.e. /opt/hfs9.1.xxx. Run Houdini as an end user, *not* root. Do *not* run houdini as ‘sudo houdini’. I suspect at some point you did that, and the houdini9.1 account in your $HOME is owned by root. *No* files or directories in your home directory should be owned by root.
Try deleting $HOME/houdini9.1 completely(you might have to use sudo to do this!), and see if what I suggest helps.
Cheers,
J.C.
[EDIT Simulpost! At least I got a rant in )

yeah i already gave myself access to houdini9.1 folder.
so it's all working now.
and yeah chose Ubuntu because I'm new to Linux.
Ubuntu serves as a launch platform.
In time i am going to try to move to a linux based operating system that will give me more power.
if you can recommend me a linux platform for the future please do.
i am also thinking of getting more memory like 8 gigs of ram to accommodate my needs I'm already running 64.(aaah the beauty of linux)

I don't think you'll get anymore “power” from another distro. Ubuntu has it's own way of doing things. That is for sure, but it isn't going to slow you down if you know what you're doing.
I install Houdini just as listed above. Install it in /opt/hfsx.x.xxx and never launch it as root. I also make /opt/hfsx.x.xxx readable + writable since unsaved scenes write data to that directory, and I tend to mess around a lot.
If you're concerned with performance there's a ton of guides on google for making Ubuntu run faster in many different regards.
8 gigs sounds pretty cool as well. I'm using 6 now, and it's definitely well worth it.

Hi Tamis,
great another Dutch speaking houdnik. That makes, uhm, four, no, five I think. I bet Sesi could launch some nice session here in Amsterdam now. Apart from being a very nice city it also has some nice “assets” which can't be found in the U.S. that easily, and it's all legal!
If you want to try a linux distro and you are still a newbie you could give Opensuse a try. It's a bit more normal than the weird sudo-security policy of ubuntu.
