I agree that computer graphics is hard - and by extension houdini - ultimately being good at anything requires both thinking and effort; a different paradigm to using AI.
Houdini will certainly benefit from further development, however Houdini's core power is allowing artists to manipulate numbers to create art; and that involves thinking and problem solving - which isn’t easy.

Interesting thread - I started using pop os a few years back and working houdini and nuke in pop os is fantastic - snappy / stable / amazing use of resources - no issues at all
Yes you need to learn some Linux tricks - but nothing compared to actually learning houdini
Pop os is super simple
And you can set up your own shell environments based on projects etc
Linux is awesome

Hey Vux
latest build doesn't seem to install if i don't use the houdini.env.
I'm using bash to set my environment and HOUDINI_PATH - rather then setting in houdini.env - and i get this error
Traceback (most recent call last):
File “modeler_menu”, line 1, in <module>
File “/mnt/FRAMESTORE/common/dev/pipeline/houdini/DM/python2.7libs/dm/modeling_tools.py”, line 2, in <module>
import ui, geo_utils
File “/mnt/FRAMESTORE/common/dev/pipeline/houdini/DM/python2.7libs/dm/ui.py”, line 21, in <module>
from modeler_hotkeys import hotkeys
ImportError: No module named modeler_hotkeys
is this fixable?
It works fine setting HOUDINI_PATH in the env file - but i'd prefer to use bash and a .sh script -
Can you see what might be the problem?
Thanks
N

Absolutely it is - Houdini is for creating anything you can imagine. Using it right now to concept a vast biological world - if you want to backup illustration and painting Houdini is a great choice, and can take concepting to the next level.

Hi all
This is a VFX test and breakdown for my little test commercial “Warrior” - A major technical milestone in the project; using HoudiniFX of course and rendered in Mantra.
The result of much learning, thinking and great help and tips from the sidefx and Odforce forums. thanks all houdini peeps!

no more vop sops ….. an aspect I used every job and will miss.
Rob
You probably know is already but just in case, SESI just informed me that should I ever need the VOPSOP just type :
oppadd vopsop
…..inside of a SOP network.
Still, i can imagine the replacement attribvop is just as powerful without missing features.

Yes of course, accel was just an input, not an instant variable.
I've been in Nuke too long lately, and I've completely forgotten how Houdini works!! :shock:

Me on Mint and it flies! I installed the cuda package from Nvidia which also installs driver 340 something or other, Which I suspect is helping houdini work really well. For example the standard drivers in the manager weren't good enough for Nuke. So anyone on linux get the cuda 6.5 install.
I don't know if cuda has any role in houdini but the nvidia package works flawlessly in getting you card set up.
