McNistor, now I understand: it's a sausage monument!
twod, It is not in the hard edges. ndickson is right. Clearing checkbox “Add vertex normal” in Extrude node helps. Also helps Vertex node with “No Normal” before subdivision. Not very logical, it may be worth left unchecked “Add Vertex Normal” checkbox by default in Polyextrude node because people that studying modelling can fall into a stupor. But right now I do not care about it. I studying new Polyextrude. It's revolution in modelling, really!

Same question asked my wife. Nothing special. Just random sequence of polyextrudes to demonstrate a problem. But after subdivision… Now you see. But in fact I was making a spoon when faced with this problem.

Here is a bug or new feature? I made simple polygonal object with polyextrude, added Crease attribute to selected edges. Then I subdivided object. I made many times similar things in previous versions, but now (H15.0.224.16) everything begins unusually. With Flat View in viewport it's OK, but Smooth and Render views makes strange result. But not all so sad. If I remove Subdivide node and turn on Render polygons as subdivision object parameter it seems OK in Render view. What is it? New feature or new bug? If I don't use Polyextrude node, the problem does not occurs. Or if I open old version project (with old Polyextrude) - no problem. What is the reason: new Polyextrude, Subdivide node or my curve hands?

Line node behaves very strange in Houdini 12.0.557 (Win7 x64). I have only applied Line Node with 8 points. What is it?

I had already see what qualitative result the Mantra surface can to create. Only why in Houdini there is no enough of ready materials based on Mantra surface at least to learn to create own materials on their basis. Besides, the fast result is sometimes necessary. It is interesting, whether the library of pre-made materials in Houdini 12 becomes richer how it was in Houdini 10?

I notice the glass material that made with Mantra Surface is too slow for render, especially with environment map (I used Environment Light for it). Trying to optimize scene I have found glass material (see picture below), named as “Oglass”. I just have connected it's outputs to surface_output, set Index of Refraction to 1.2 and got nice glass material. Besides, it has turned out fast enough for render. Though this material doesn't interact with Environment Light's map, I have made sphere with texture for environment. I have some questions about it material. Why is it faster than Mantra Surface? And how can I read more about this material? The matter is that there is empty space in help about it.
Thank you!
Thank you!

Houdini is such big and immense that while I thought of one, has forgotten about other… I forgot about Extra Image Planes. But problem exists still. The matter is that when I turn on Enable Opacity Falloff render time increases dramatically. (During rendering of one frame it was possible to render a sequence about 100 frames with Opacity Falloff turned off) Whether there is other method of influence on a opacity? Here is my project file. Be so kind as, look it please. (Here we talking about material called “glass” in my project)

Thank you for reply!
But, unfortunately, not all so is simple. I just moved grid in your project to see empty background through torus and alpha (in Render View) is still opaque. I want to make semitransparent alpha behind the torus for composing in Photoshop or After Effects.

This is fragment of rendered scene with glass material based on Mantra Surface. (I turn on Enable refraction and set Inside IOR 1.5 for thermometer body material) There is plan with Shadowmatte material for casting shadows. This image was rendered in png format and opened in Photoshop to add a background. You can see that shadows casting by thermometer is semitransparent, but thermometer body is fully opaque were no objects present in the scene - we can't see background added in Photoshop through it. What can I do to make the influence to alpha of output file by transparency of material? I understand that if no other object seen through glass then nothing to be refracted. And still how to solve this problem?

I has just found out that if the Premiere has been launched by the first after system boot further Houdini doesn't hinder Premiere's operation.

Yes, Houdini (11.0.595) really works with Catalyst 11.1, BUT… Premiere Pro CS5 causes display driver crash on start (I get message: “Display driver stopped responding and has recovered”). You ask: at what is here Houdini? The answer is that Premiere works normally until Houdini has been launched. It is no matter closed Houdini or not before Premiere launch. Now Premiere (and Houdini) don't works until system reboot. With Catalyst 10.9 such phenomenon was not watched. Those who use the Premiere check it up please.

It seems that in my case it has turned out on the contrary: ATI in the driver have written functions which aren't supported by my video card. Means, it is necessary to download not the new driver, but a new video card
Not so long ago I heard history that Nvidia's video cards overheated because of an error in the driver. Both those and others are forced to hurry up - such are market laws, and they are not exactly humane…

Don't become angry strongly on ATI. I use for a long time their video cards and I have as a whole less problems, than my colleagues who uses Nvidia. As it isn't strange, I now with success work in Adobe Premiere and After Effects CS5 on ATI HD3300 with HDV. Well and drivers are an eternal sad song… Not about ATI only.

In Windows: Device Manager/Display Adapters/ (right click on your adapter)/ Properties. Then click on Roll Back Driver button on Driver tab. Also you can uninstall (Uninstall button) driver and install older version from ATI/AMD site.

Thanks for the answer. It is problem ATI or Houdini? Whether is there a hope of that that something will change? After all not so pleasant perspective to remain forever with drivers 10.9 …
