Never mind. I just discovered the “Drive Simulation” tab in the shelf tools.. *facepalm*

Technical Discussion » How to achieve this sort of control over soft bodies?

I came across an interesting (and NSFW) video on vimeo: https://vimeo.com/channels/staffpicks/244052622 [vimeo.com]
I'm wondering how they're achieving this kind of control over soft bodies?
for ex. the slow dragging of the head across the floor.. or all of the heads floating around in the tank?
I've been able to achieve some animation of soft bodies by constraining a patch of points on my solid object, via target constraint, attaching a transform node(to the trail node within my solid OBJ), rest node to that, and pointing to the rest node as the soft bodies target deformation. That way i can enter expressions into the translate parameters. something like “sin($F*12)*.8” (I'm really new to Houdini, so i hope that made sense lol)
So is it a matter of learning dif expressions? if so, could someone point me to a helpful tutorial? Is there a different way to drive soft body objects like this? (other than constraining points and animating them)
Any help would be appreciated.

New to Houdini. Using 16.0.633.
Is it possible to have an organic mass collide with a rigid body object? It's not working for me and I'm not sure why..

New to Houdini. working in 15.5 on Mac OSX.
My organic tissue object is not colliding properly with my solid object.
GIF Example: https://gyazo.com/3477cffe1a481a25a4474e858b7ef953 [gyazo.com]
Anytime they touch, they repel each other with insane force instead of just simply colliding.
Can someone fix this? and tell me how? I'll include the project file.
Is it because It's my own imported geometry and not a SOP Object? DO i need to make it a Solid Object?
Thanks!
Edit: the project file i attached, would not upload so I've used mediafire instead.

Very new to Houdini, coming from C4D. Say i have two spheres in my scene. I want one to be stationary and the other to be an organic mesh that is attracted to the stationary sphere.. So when i simulate the scene, the softbody sphere should fly over and stick to the stationary sphere.
I hate to ask what i feel like is such a noob question.. but I've looked around and all i can find on attraction has to do with particles.. nothing on how to attract one object to another. I'm probably overlooking something that's right in front of my face but..
how would i go about doing this?
Thanks!

55GB isn't the upper bound, the OS can access up to 18 exabytes. 24 cores x 100% means it should be able to go to 2400%; 1500% is just above half.
In the end you need more ram. Unix doesn't really allow you readily limit memory usage, though you can always try ‘ulimit’:
http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/108174/how-to-persist-ulimit-settings-in-osx-mavericks [unix.stackexchange.com]
Okay, i figured something out.. all the models i was using in the sims were .FBX.. i converted them all to .OBJ and the sims run flawlessly. Really weird, not sure why. Went ahead and bought 16 more GB's of RAM anyways.
Thanks for your continued help, Artye.

solidembed1 is an HDA - and it is locked.
you can RMB on the node and select Allow Editing of Contents.
Sweet! Thanks, dude!

Houdini noob here. I imported a model to play around with organic tissue/solid object and all seemed to be going well. It created the proxy object from my original object and i wanted to edit the remesh to make it more detailed for my accurate sims.. (hope that makes sense)
However, when i click into the node > solidembed1 > remesh1 and all of the parameters are greyed out.. all of the nodes on this string are also greyed out..
I also cannot add any additional nodes or i get: Failed to modify node or parameter because of a permission error. Possible Causes include locked assets, takes, product permissions or user-specified permissions.
If i click show details, it reveals this: Traceback (most recent call last):
File “sop_clip”, line 5, in <module>

any ideas?

Still having trouble with this. In Activity Monitor (Mac OSX Task Manger equivalent), even after using Houdini -j20 to launch, it still uses up to “1500%” of my CPU.. which makes absolutely no sense to me.. Under Memory it also states Houdini is using as much as 55 GB of my 16 GB of available RAM..
How can a program use 1500% of my CPU and almost 4 times my available amount of RAM??
Every time i do anything even remotely intensive (cooking, simulating, etc.) These numbers essentially rise infinitely until Mac OSX pauses the program, stating that i have no memory left to run it. At this point i have no option but to force quit Houdini.
All i need is a reliable way to truly limit the CPU and Memory usage of Houdini..
If someone could offer me any suggestions at all, I'll try just about anything at this point. This is beyond frustrating.

You can set the number of thread by the -j flag. From the Houdini terminal:
houdini -j20
would be 20 threads - including hyperthreading, that would leave 4 for the computer.
Edited for the dual procs
Very useful! thank you! any way to allocate a certain amount of RAM to Houdini as well? I found that it also uses all of my RAM.

Houdini FX 15.5.523
OSX EL Capitan 10.11.4
CPU: 2 x 2.93 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
RAM: 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
When running cooking operations, Houdini uses 100% of my CPU, essentially freezing my computer. ESC. doesn't cancel it and i end up having to force quit the application. I'm really getting tired of not being able to cook anything. Only setting i could find for it was under Edit > Preferences > Compositing > Cooking. Tried disabling multithread cooking which was only set to 24 threads in the first place, tried enabling GPU assistance and and neither of these seem to make much of a difference. In activity monitor it gives me something like 800% CPU usage for Houdini but then says 50% of my CPU is still idle..
Anyone else had this issue or know of a possible fix?

Don't know what to do here. very new to Houdini. just wanted to play with Organic Tissue/Solid Object.
I was following along with this tutorial: https://vimeo.com/118406486 [vimeo.com] At around 5:30, when he add's a clip node, that's where i get this error. All the nodes/parameters are just greyed out for me.
nothing to do with takes, not sure how to check for locked assets, and there shouldn't be any trouble with product permissions.
Again, I;m a huge Houdini noob..
Any ideas?
