i3d file import difficulties

Hi there I'm following the clouds and fractals tutorial on cmivfx
and I've become a bit unstuck when trying to export and import the i3d file format.
I render out an i3d file and re import it into a 3d texture volume VOP . But it does not appear in the view port. I've tried using the project files from the chapter but still have the same problem.
I'm trying to work out whether it's operator or computer error.
Does anyone have a project with an i3d file that definitely imports and displays on their system that I can have a go at using?
thanks

Hi there,

I am having the exact same problem across every build beyond what he is using in the Fractals tutorial. I am currently using 11.0.685. I have rebuilt the network twice now and I get bupkiss.

Can you upload your rendered .i3d files here so I can try and view them with an isosurface sop? Any other help would be awsome. Thank you.

Hey David
I uploaded a file with some i3d files here in a project where I'm trying to apply
animation to the fractal clouds vex shader.

http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_forum&Itemid=172&page=viewtopic&t=21715&highlight= [sidefx.com]

so you can try that.

The first thing I did when I was having trouble was downloading the project files from the Cmivfx website, and tried exporting the i3d from those, have you done that yet?

Also another thing to check is that your bounding box is correctly set up , if it's not you'll export nothing. I did that a few times. A clue would be checking the data sizes of the exported files to see if there's anything in them.

Hi David,
I'm not sure if you still need it. But I also had my difficulties with the i3d files.
After asking around I was advised to recreated the geo2i3d rop.

In attach my setup which works very well now.

Here is a test render I did: http://vimeo.com/21129148 [vimeo.com]

Cheers

I am also having problems with the i3d texture.

I tried to remake the geo2i3d rop and still the problem persists, I am using build 581.

When I try to render the cloudDensity and the cloudGradient both files get the same file size and when I use them on the cvex nothing appears on the viewport like in the video.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply.

I am using the file provided for CMIVFX, I just click in the render button to recreate the i3d files, the problem is when I try to load inside the cvex in the 3D texture node, nothing appears.

I also tried to manually recreate the scene and the problem is the same.

Fell free to take a look and see what you can get.

Hi there
Here's the i3d “PYRO” cloud density and offset files
just in case you want to move on with the tutorial.

I just checked your file it works fine at exporting in my older mac houdini 11.0.504 but not in the latest houdini 11.0.700. or 11.0.658
My working exports can be seen in 11.0.504 and 11.0.658
but not in 11.0.700
So I guess it's a build bug thingy?

Hummm

I tried to save the i3d files in a newer build (11.0.658) and the result is the same so the problem is saving the i3d file with the bgeo2i3d asset.

Good to know that someone else is seeing the problem.

Maybe Sidefx can fix it on the next build.

Hey guy's, did you try to export it with the hip file I uploaded some posts ago. There I recreated the goe2i3d. Also don't forget when you re-export the i3d file, to rename it or to delete the previous file.

Yes, it worked fine it seems that the real problem is the export stuff.

Yeah! Rebuilding the geo2i3d did the trick, Thanks claudio!
