everytime I render the smoke..
it less take 10 min ↑ to render one frame…
but use maya fluid or fumefx ..
always just take 2min ↓ to render..
my res is 2048x1080.
I love the houdini workflow & pyro shape.
but how can I speed up the render time??
I use
basic smoke
Pixel sample 2
volume step size 1
what else I can tweak?
thanks advance!

This has been exhaustively discussed in the forum, try doing a search and you'll have enough material to read for a day at least.

Just to comment on FumeFX, They use a highly optimized illumination method where they only calculate one vector to the camera then use that over the whole volume. So its technically wrong, but gives very fast volume rendering!
With fumeFX you will notice this if you render a camera view then rotate it to render a different view.. (think panorama style). You wont be able to stitch the images together because the lighting at the edges wont match.

is that possible to optimize the render speed by give up some detail?
VEX, shader, HDK?

my full screen smoke,
res: 2048x1152 using the 20min to render out..
I love pyro, but I need to speed up the render.
Thanks!

well, the first place to go would be the “Volume Step Size” at the Mantra render node.
You´re indeed sacrifying some quality. Also, remember this parameter is scale dependant, so if you didn´t touch it at all, it´s possible it´s already lower than it should be, and guilty of your rather long render times (though I must mention I don´t consider a 20 min volumetric render for 2k res, a long render time. Of course, it depends on what´s on your screen).

Netvudu and talash Thanks!

I just find the volume step size is a very important parameter.
and I will try opacity later.
thx!
