If you're using Nvidia drivers 310+, try using 306 instead. 310+, Win8 and Houdini seem to have issues with periodic freezing.

Thank you Mark!

I changed from display driver build 310.90 to 306.97
So far, work as usual with no special errors.

I think forum moderator must create and stick solution about NVidia Drivers.

Just on 1st page in Technical Discussion we can see at least 3 topics

There have been a few threads in the forum about it, and I did put in on the system requirements page a few weeks ago but I guess people don't read that.

Im running houdini 12.1.188 on win7 with Nvidia 306.97 drivers and am getting the NT_GeneratorThread issue sometimes… should I go to the latest drivers?

The newest 320.00 beta driver has resolved this problem, so any version in the 320 series will work properly with Houdini on a GEForce card with Windows 8.

As this is a beta driver, you may wish to wait for a WQHL driver (or at least a non-beta driver).

FWIW,
I've been plagued with crashes in window 8. even with the 306 driver and the newest beta.

I believe my problem is I have two graphics cards, even though they are the same ones NVidia 580. I have three monitors, one is a cintiq

Oddly enough I was able to get to work for a day, but I can't get the latest build of 12.5 running.

I'm going to pull my second card and see if that helps. I imagine it will.

Odd that this happens in 12.# builds.. I've had this configuration for awhile and 11.# worked fine

Any thoughts on the two card support?

Do you have all monitors driven by the same card, or split between the two? Also, is there a crashlog generated in your temp directory that you could post?

two monitors on one card, the cintiq on the other.

not that it is a full solution, but I pulled my second graphics card and now I have no problem opening Houdini.
Just not as fun to lose my third monitor.

It would be great to be able to have it work again like it did in 11.##. with that version I was able to run with multiple cards A o K.
