becoming fx artist

Hi,
I'm currently a french student in a 3D school and I'd like to specialize in fx at the end of my studies. As my school is more specialized in animation, I'll have to learn it mainly on my own. So, I started to learn Houdini but because of my lack of knowledge in fx, I don't manage to do what I want.
So, do you have any advice to learn the basics of fx? For example the transformation matrix, quaternion, mainly the maths which can be used behind any fx.

Do you have any other ressources ? (I tried to find something like fxphd course “Math for visual effect” but in free access, do you have any idea?)

I would recommend you start with some of the basics. Don't focus on software-specific techniques. Instead, learn the fundamentals.
