Just saw the sneek peek of 14, very impressive! I've been on the fence on getting houdini indie, mainly because I'm not sure I have the time to learn a new software, but 14 looks just too cool. If I get indie now does that include the update to 14 when its released? Thanks

Glad I looked around first - I have the same question, and also another that I might try to sneak in if there's no huge penalty for ‘drifting’ a thread.

There is a 1920x1080 limit in Indie…there is also an ENGINE (perhaps available separately, or is it a part of Indie) that allows movement of data into a package like Max or Maya. A two-part question:

a) Is there a way - legally and ethically! - to take an Indie file and render it at higher resolution in another package? Meaning is the resolution limit solely with respect to Mantra?

b) I am nowhere near the income limit for Indie, but my DREAM would be to produce something that VERYBIGCompany would want to buy/distribute. Imagine that happens but they want 2k or 4k resolution……I am 99% sure that Houdini will NOT read Indie files…..does this mean that if I'm offered big bucks I'd have to RECREATE all of the files in a full license of Houdini, or is there some way that we might work with sidefx to have the files converted? I know…low likelihood of happening, but if I DO want to eventually take off, I'd like to know there might be SOME option to get higher resolution without starting over.

Thanks,
JT

I believe you get all the updates during your paid indie year - so you would get H14 once it ships, naturally (and all its updates until your year runs out).

Concerning b)
In the old Apprentice-HD licensing program there was a clause that if you upgraded to a full license at some point they would do a one-time conversion of your scenes and assets. So there was a technical way to do this. I have not read into the fine print of the indie license yet, but I imagine it's just the same. Be sure to ask them first though (or wait for an official to respond here) to avoid any nasty surprises.

Hi, this is my first post. I'm really interested in getting Houdini indie, but also wanted to double-check that purchasing the yearly indie license now grants a free upgrade to H14 when it's released?

Thanks

The more I think about it the more I think it would have to, because it's really a rental not a perpetual license.

If they do rental style licensing and still lock you into a version like perpetual licenses, you have the worst of both worlds

FYI I emailed sidefx after I made this post and got a confirmation that v14 is included in updates if you get houdini indie now since it is subscription based

Is indie resolution limited to 1440x1440 or is it 1080x1080 ?

I hope no more resolution limitation in H14 Indie !

I am trying to find out the maximum square resolution available. So if it is 1440 x 1440 then I will buy some indie licenses. If it is 1080 x 1080 it is no use to me.

Are you guys talking about single frame renders or rendering an animated sequence with indie?

I need to render out square sequences in 1200 x 1200 which is in theory lower resolution than 1920 x 1080. Is this possible in Houdini Indie ?
By definition, resolution is the total amount of pixels and it should be independent of aspect ratio. So I am assuming that Houdini indie should be capable of rendering 1440 x 1440 sequences which is equivalent of 1920 x 1080 resolution in total amount of pixels.

Yes, you can render 1440 x 1440 sequences with Indie.
There's no resolution cap on single frame renders.

you could make a custom camera with 4 tiles at 1024x1024. or buy a houdini fx there you get unlimited mantra render.
if somebody can affort a fulldome theater they also can pay a fair price for the content!

btw. look at touchdesigner maybe this also can help.

You could simply resize the render in AfterFx, or perhaps COPs?, to 2048 x 2048.

Yes i could do that.
But it's like render in 910*512 scale to 1280*720 and watch on 1920*1080 tv.

I dont want burn people's eyes ^^

It's ok, i am happy with TouchDesigner.

so we can bake/render textures at 4k, 8k if we need?

That's great to hear if that is the case. I was thinking that the limit was for renders, period.
