how to "kill" particles reaching max lifespan or a

It seems the particles reaching the max lifespan around a spatial boundary will stay there rather than been “killed”.

May I ask how to get rid of the particles from the scene based on certain criteria so that the total number of particles will not keep increasing?

You are using old particle system. Just turn on Remove Unused Points on POP Network.

Or
Use new POPs which automatically removes killed particles (unused). You can set kill condition in POP Kill dop or in POP Source itself.
