trying to load a .hip file that was working fine last week..

Load failed for E:/Projects/bit-bio/bitbio-highres-stills1.hiplc
Error: Was expecting {(curve1.parm) in parameter file.
Invalid .hip file header

The project loads, but most nodes are missing.. Anything I can do here? Guessing this is bad.

Unfortunately, no. The scene file is corrupted, you can try to find backups of the scene.
