It is possible to upgrade to houdini indie from apprentice.
In this video they state that you can upgrade your files, but I can not open the link they are using for doing that. Do I have Indie to be installed in order to get access. I just want to make sure that I will be able to convert my files because I really need alembic export for my current scene. Do they still offer that possibility?

Hmm okay. Thank you but hard mode really does not give me what I need. Very unfortunate.
